Abstract

Purpose : This study was attempted to identify the factors affecting quality of life in geriatric hospital inpatients.

Methods: The subjects were 181 in four geriatric hospital inpatients. Data were collected on October 15~November 15, 2015 by making personal contacts with the employees in charge of nursing personnel in C City, getting approval from the hospital directors, that agreed to participate in the study, and conducting individual interviews.

Results: Their quality of life had weak positive correlations with their upper right muscular strength (r=.26, p<.001), upper left muscular strength (r=.23, p=.002), and lower right muscular strength (r=.15, p=.039). Of the factors influencing the quality of life of the subjects, depression had the biggest influence (©¬=-.48) on it with explanatory power of 33.9%. With the addition of need for assistance for daily life and regular exercise, it explained 46.2% of overall quality of life.

Conclusion: The quality of life of geriatric hospital elderly inpatients increased which raises a need to increase their physical strength and decrease their depression to enhance their quality of life. Also a need for comprehensive integrated nursing interventions for higher quality of life including programs designed to increase their physical strength through muscle exercise and reduce their
